Mary Lee Goldsmith

At work in the studio...The Artist
Mary Lee Goldsmith is one of the most original ceramic sculptors working on the West Coast. She studied at Okanagan College, the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts and the University of Victoria before receiving her BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts. She developed her unique style as a painter, and applied her style to ceramic platters and bowls. Her artistic evolution led to the creation of extraordinary ceramic vessels that combine primitive forms and post-modern visions.

Mary Lee's work has been featured in several exhibitions and galleries, and her work may be found in many private collections.

The Vessel
Mary Lee Goldsmith's sculptures blend the mystery of ancient vessels with colorful, other-worldly figures to celebrate the timeless cycles of life. Her work reminds us of the essential nature of vessels. Even her figures possess apertures and hollow interiors that hold delicate secrets and marvelous galaxies of unspeakable dreams. From embryonic vessel to funeral urn, Mary Lee's vessels carry the life giving water of illumination, hold our miracles and ignite our visions.

These vessels contain more than aesthetic virtue and primitive truths. They create a world of natural forms and mystical beings that transcend traditional language and sexuality. Some vessels are inhabited by a landscape of exaggerated figures with arms that stretch wherever they need to reach. Others are crafted like precious jewels or sacred temples. These vessels depict a mysterious world that is in constant motion and perfect balance. They offer each of us a chance to see inside our most primitive self, and embrace the natural rhythms of our creative spirit.
